Settlers of Catan 2005 Championships
Congratulations to:
John Wilson the 2005 Scottish Champion; and
Adam Wilson the runner up.
Both won the right to represent Scotland at the 2005 World Settlers of Catan Championships in October 2005.
The 2005 tournament attracted a near record entry of 26 players. The format was the same as 2004:
- Four rounds of play;
- Each game had four or three players...wish we could have made it 28;
- Players were randomly allocated to boards;
- Each table in the same round used the same layout;
- The tournament points available were 10-8-6-4-2 with ties sharing equally;
- No individual scores were published until all the event finished;
Round by round
In round one the winners were John Wilson, Adam Wilson, Gavin Shearer, Ricky Linton, Alastair Leishman, Hendrik Little and Philippa Dall.
In round two the winners were John Wilson, Gavin Shearer, Tanya Fox, David Cromie, Ricky Linton, Grant Connor and Marc Twynholm.
In round three the winners were John Wilson [sense a trend here?], Adam Wilson, Gavin Inglis, David Cromie, Paul Cantwell, Steven Auld and Sean McGinness.
In round four the winners were John Wilson, Adam Wilson, Gavin Inglis, Tanya Fox, Grant Connor, David Tittle, and Paul Macleod.
The top five were:
1. John Wilson - 40 points
2. Adam Wilson - 34 points
3. Gavin Shearer - 32 points
=4. Gavin Inglis - 31 points
=4. Tanya Fox - 31 points
This year we asked for suggestions for good gamesmanship. The special award for this went to Martin Robertson, nominated by several people for his refusal to do a bad deed to anybody. Well done, Martin. Good to see that the tournament format doesn't stop people having fun and being nice to one another.
John's rock solid win in every round meant it was always going to be hard to catch him. If Adam Wilson hadn't had such a dud result in the second round, where he finished 3rd, he would have also scooped the top place. But it wasn't to be. with a second finish and then trotted off three wins in a row. Impressive.
Again, I want to thank the players for making this a great tournament to run. A special thanks to those who travelled a distance to compete and I hope you all had fun.
